Jacksonville Public Library’s Zine Collection presents the 2011 Zine Symposium, featuring keynote speaker Kathleen Hanna

The Jacksonville Public Library Zine Symposium includes a panel discussion with local writers and zine publishers, followed by keynote speaker Kathleen Hanna presenting "Zines: The Personal is Political." Hanna is a New York City-based artist, best known for her groundbreaking performances as a member of the seminal 90's punk band Bikini Kill and her more recent multimedia group, Le Tigre. Hanna is a longtime zine writer and one of the founders of the Riot Grrl movement. She is currently the subject of two documentaries, The Punk Singer and Who Took The Bomp? Le Tigre On Tour. The purpose of the 2011 Zine Symposium is to encourage community dialogue on the role of independent publishing and its connection to politics, gender issues and personal experience.

Topic: Personal Creations: DIY in Corporatized Culture

Join in conversation with Kathleen Hanna and prominent local and regional zine authors as they discuss the challenges of creating do-it-yourself art in corporatized culture. Panelists include Kathleen Hanna (keynote speaker), Shelton Hull (columnist, Folio Weekly), Mark Creegan (art professor, Florida State College at Jacksonville), Travis Fristoe (librarian, zine author) and Adee Roberson (artist, zine author). The panel will be moderated by Duncan Barlow, Professor of English at the University of North Florida.
